The forecast called for cloudy skies with periods of showers. A perfect day for soccer.
All of the boys teams had an early wake up call to eat breakfast and get on the bus to make the 141 mile trip to Norwich for the early afternoon game times. Today would prove to be the toughest competition. But the boys looked forward to getting off site and seeing some more of the English country side. Throughout the trip the boys won and lost but gained invaluable lessons in playing TOUGH and working as a team.
The older boys team battled hard and beat the Norwich side 3-1. All in all it was great competition for the older boys throughout the week and really solidified and brought them closer as a team.
The U 14 girls and U 15 girls traveled to the Brighton & Hove Albion training facility to play matches against both a Brighton girls team and a team from Bournmouth. Today proved to be the toughest competition for both groups making a great day of hard fought last games. The U15 girls had some easier games earlier in the week but were able to finish the trip off with some tough competition and really show their strength and ability with a final hard fought 1-0 win. The U14 girls group finished really came together and finished off their tour with wins against both teams as well.

In the evening the U16 Blackbear group traveled over to Lancing College to eat dinner and later play the women from Lewis FC. Though they lost 4-3, it too was great competition. They were able to play a few ladies teams throughout the trip and really show how competitive girls soccer in America can be by playing up to and in most cases better than the English women team's ability. They should all be very proud of how the represented themselves and their Club this trip.
All of the boys teams attended the Norwich FC vs Swindon match at Carrow Road for the EFL Cup or English Football League Cup. This was a first round match in the Cup for all 92 league clubs, though premier league clubs don't begin play until round two. Since already out there for final matches, all the boys got to experience another stadium and see Norwich beat Swindon 3-2. Swindon scored first in the 25th minute but by halftime Norwich FC was up 3-1. A goal for Swindon in the 62nd minute made the end of the game tight and great to watch but wasn't enough in the end and Norwich came out with the win.
With all of the boys away for matches, the U14 girls came back to Lancing College and took full advantage of an empty dorm, making use of the ping long table, video games and overall quiet.
Apart from our day excursion on the Brighton Pier, the skies and weather have been good to us.
This morning all of the teams at Lancing College and Ardingly College had their last training session with their Brighton Staff Coaches. Most groups started with some light warm ups and possession drills before heading into an 11v11 game for the girls as well as games with the boys. It was a good way to end out the week for the coaches to be able see the group play and see how they implement the tactics learned over the week. All of the Players will have a personal one on one meeting with their coach as well as get a critique/ evaluation form.
Back at the dorms everyone showered before lunch and prepared for the Amex Stadium Tour planned for this afternoon.
In this downtime, I headed into the Lancing College Chapel. The biggest difference between the two campuses is the architecture at Lancing and The Chapel. Set up on a hill, the chapel can be seen for quite a distance and is a destination for tourists.
It is an example of Gothic Revival architecture that started foundation construction in 1868, but in 1977 when construction finished, it continues to remain unfinished. It is the largest school chapel in the world though they worship mostly in the crypt down below the main chapel.
The outstanding feature to the chapel is the large Rose stained glass window. This year the tapestries are all being cleaned but you can still enter, walk all the way to the front and turn around to view the magnificent stained glass feature.
We got to see the differences in the Visitors changing rooms vs the Home team. While everything is the same in size, the Visitors area is stark and basic while the Home team experiences the comforts needed for good game preparation.
The Seven Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs that run along the English Channel. We started our walk at Beachy Head in East Sussex which has the highest chalk sea cliff. Just the bus ride out to the Cliffs posed spectacular coastal views of small towns and sheep fields.
The entire group of boys and girls set out together along the Cliffs enjoying the spectacular views. It felt great to walk and enjoy the amazing weather, another day of sun and blue skies!, after a day couped up on the bus and in the stands for a game.
Every player reacted with amazement at the scenery. There is nothing comparable on the East Coast, and they scrambled to take pictures and selfies. Anyone with height issues stayed back from the edge, but I think the stress level of the Sports Tours Europe and SUSC staff was on high alert keeping everyone safe. More than once, the staff mentioned coming back to visit again when young lives weren't being looked after to truly enjoy the Cliffs 😀
Everyone finished their lunches, used the restrooms and reboarded the bus for the 20 minute ride to the the Amex Stadium, home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. The American Express Community Stadium is located in the village of Falmer and was completed in 2011. This is the first season that the stadium will host Premier League games as the club was promoted from the Championship after last season.
Tonight is a pre season friendly match against Athletico Madrid. After a long walk the kids were excited to settle into their seats and watch some of their idols play. But first everyone stopped for some pre game nourishment. More of the kids were open to trying the meat pies this time. A choice of steak and ale, chicken gammon and leeks or vegetarian gave a choice for everyone.
The game was tight for the first forty minutes with no score until Madrid's Nico Gaitan fired a hard struck 30 yard shot that the Brighton keeper Maty Ryan misread and fumbled it into the net. Both teams made some changes after halftime and at 61 minutes Brighton took advantage of a free kick and new signing Pascal Gross scored on a deflected free kick. However 5 minutes later Fernando Torres headed in a cross to put Athletico back in the lead. In the 76th minute Brighton scored their own header goal from Steve Sidwell once again tying the score at 2 all. But with three minutes left in the game Athletico Madrid took the 3-2 lead for the win. Griezmann's initial close range shot was saved by Ryan but the rebound was slotted home by Lucas Hernandez. All in all a competitive, high scoring game making it fun to watch.
Tomorrow everyone is back on the fields. In the morning the younger girls and boys at Lancing College have a training session before headed back over to the Amex Stadium for a stadium tour and a trip into the club shop.
The older girls and boys over at Ardingly College also have a morning training session with the afternoon visit to the Amex Stadium. The older girls teams have another round of games in the evening to be played at Ardingly College.Seacoast United Abroadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08271998240347030717noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5258554266906874846.post-20304330988644975322017-08-05T14:58:00.000-07:002017-08-09T10:14:03.105-07:00Day 7: August 5thBack up at 7:30 am for a hearty breakfast in preparation for a full day travelling to London and back to watch the Fulham vs Norwich City Championship League Match at Craven Cottage, Fulham's home field. Immediately upon arrival the kids got a packed lunch and walked to the park directly next to the stadium to eat. Just as we arrived, the rain started falling. Luckily, the tree cover in the park provided some cover and the rain squall only lasted about fifteen minutes.
Craven Cottage has been Fulham FC home ground since 1896 holding a capacity of 25,700 fans. The stadium sits right on the bank of the River Thames. We sat on the Putney end of the stadium which generally seats the visitors, though it also houses the neutral area down in front of the Cottage. It is nicknamed "little Switzerland" and Craven Cottage is currently the only ground in the UK to have one. Our seats are directly under the Cottage which house the changing rooms and the balcony where players and family sit.
Our seats filled most of the neutral zone seating lower corner giving us a great view of the Players walking on and off the pitch before, at half time and after the game. It also gave kids direct access for autographs, selfless and high fives after the game.
It is an exciting season opener with Fulham dominating the first half. They scored first on an own goal by Norwich's Martin in the 25th minute. Following half time, Norwich began to take control of the game creating opportunities without being able to score. A rare Fulham chance saw the ball strike the post. Just as it looked like Fulham would take the points on the season opener, they were caught on the the break and Nelson Oliveira broke clear in the 88th minute and shot under the advantage ing goalkeeper to equalize.
Woke up to another bright and sunny day in the South of England. Today, is a full excursion day for the entire group. Everyone will be headed to Portsmouth via Coach bus at 9am to return at 5pm. Thankfully, we expect great weather throughout.
Everyone is woken up at 7:30am daily and we head to the cafeteria for another breakfast at 8:30am. Hopefully people are enjoying my take on British food as there is more to come!
Every morning there is toast, yogurt, some fruit and cereal. For the most part everything is part of a typical American diet. However, one cereal, Weetabix, slightly baffles me.
They are literally the size, texture and shape of Nature Valley granola bars out in a bowl, milk poured over them and broken up with a spoon. If I hadn't seen a person actually put them in a bowl and eat them as cereal, I may have picked one up as a granola bar!
I also learned about Marmite spread this morning. It's like England's version of Nutella (though definitely not a sweet hazelnut flavor) that they spread on toast.
A great day to return to soccer.
Everyone was back up and over to breakfast at 8:30am woeful up for a day of training and games.. After a rainy day off from soccer and a bunch of down time last night, we could feel the eagerness to get back on to the field and train as well as play.
First we enjoyed a standard breakfast of fruit, breads, cereal, sausage and eggs but today we also tried crumpets.
To my American eye it is an interesting mix of English muffin and pancake.. add a little butter or jam and it is dense but delicious!
The morning consisted of a training session for all of the groups working on possession and moving the ball quickly utilizing wide players. The players were ready to get moving again after a long day of site seeing and rain.
Good weather held out until the Players were just finishing training and heading up for lunch when we experienced a quick passing shower.
The cafeteria nailed it again with pasta and Turkey options for lunch but also introducing some English classics.
The prawn crackers are a particular favorite of mine.
Personally, I think they look like the stuff we use to pad packages in America. And kind of taste like it too! Kind of like chewing on cardboard.... not bad but definitely not good.
However, dessert introduced the iced bun... literally a long roll with white icing. So simple yet so delicious.
The girls were relaxed after a day off from soccer and ready to compete. Even the bus driver was impressed with their excitement and determination giving us his bus mascot to borrow for the match day. Lily quickly named him Gerald and he brought us great luck in the games as the younger girls once again swept their games with wins.
Later in the day the U16 Blackbear girls made their first trip over to Lancing College. It is hard to ignore the beauty of the buildings threat backdrop our competitions.

Sorry Coach Owen but our Bus Driver today was too funny and the joke was a good one. Fatherhood looks good on you!
Today we welcomed in a true English Summer day. After three days of blue skies and warm temperatures, we awoke to grey skies and rain. I knew it had been going too well.
Luckily, there is no soccer planned for the day. Unfortunately, all of the teams are headed into Brighton Pier but more of that to come. First, we headed to the cafeteria for 8:30am breakfast. Here is a shot of the Lancing College Cafeteria at a quiet moment.
Most of the kids at Lancing feel like they are living straight out of a Harry Potter movie. Everything has that Hogwarts feel about it.

After breakfast the groups have classroom seminars which is perfect given the rainy day. The boys and girls alternate between an hour speaking with a Brighton & Hove Albion Team Players and a sport psychology lecture.
Mark Sullivan has a Masters Degree is Sports Psychology and is also on the coaching staff at Brighton & Hove Albion. He delivered a session on confidence, state of mind, mentality and imagery.
All of the Players have a Confidence Cup filled out by their peers listing positive qualities. It helps keep a positive mental state and Mark recommends the kids keep it in their soccer bag for future boosts of needed encouragement.

The girls also have a question and answer session with Faye Baker and Leah Samain. Faye is the number one goalie for the Brighton & Hove Albion Women's Team which will play in the FA WSL this coming season following promotion last season with a league and playoff victory. Leah is also a keeper for the Women's Team as well as a coach for the U14 girls group this week at their training sessions. The girls got to ask questions about women's soccer in the UK compared to America, discuss career soccer paths as well as force her to try her best American accent. It was great to see the girls interacting with a female pro up close and personal. Good role models are so important in a female athletes life.
A little rain ( at times it was honestly NOT a little) couldn't stop the group from enjoying some arcade games and rides.
First thing, however, everyone was happy to be off campus and able to get some non cafeteria food. Milkshakes, ice cream and Fish and Chips beat out most packed provided lunches.
When is say "fish and chips" I should clarify that although a few brave souls went with the fish, most of us opted for the chicken bites and chips 😀
After a wet bus ride home, everyone rushed to change clothes and eat before settling in to the Players Lounge for the night. The rain prohibited an outdoor evening activity so the Players voted to enjoy the Players Lounge and watch the Liverpool vs Athletico Madrid game. Regulation time ended in a tie but the penalty shootout went Athletico's way. An evening spent in the Players Lounge also meant an introduction of the snack bar.
Most of the Players enjoyed something sweet while watching the game, playing video games, foosball, table tennis and just hanging out with one another. I don't envy the poor Sports Tours Europe staff as they wrangle these kids for lights out.
Tomorrow looks to be a better weather day with chances of rain and the kids will be back on the field for training in the morning and games in the afternoon.Seacoast United Abroadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08271998240347030717noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5258554266906874846.post-75342723367399400842017-08-01T14:29:00.000-07:002017-08-03T05:41:27.628-07:00Day 3: August 1stAmazingly, we all awoke to our 3rd day in a row of clear blue skies. Everyone is up and eager to eat and get on the field. Today there is a light morning session to get the legs warmed up before our first round of games.
The cafeteria has done an amazing job keeping the players fed. The kitchen is always giving us a local flavor, today we sampled banoffee cake consisting of chocolate cake layered with bananas and toffee. As much as I have joked about the food (as I stand by my ham not bacon rant!), this was delicious! But there is also always salads, soup, bread, pasta... plenty of our home staples to keep everyone happy. At dinner time we even had macaroni and cheese which made even pickiest eater smile.
After a filling breakfast, everyone headed down to the fields for a light morning session.
The U 15 and 16 girls experienced the first excursion of the trip and headed off to Arundel Castle which is a restored medieval castle in West Sussex. The girls took a tour and explored the grounds. It sits up on a hill and commands amazing views across the rivers. They also traveled into the village for lunch and some fencing lessons.
The afternoon sessions gave most teams the opportunity to get their feet wet and play some local competition.
The U12 and 13 boys stayed at the Lancing College grounds and had a small sided game tournament vs teams from Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. The boys had some pre game jitters but after the first few minutes everyone dug deep and competed well. With both wins and losses, they gained a lot of confidence and experience in their first matches. The U16 boys also traveled over from Ardingly College to play a match vs Barnham. The boys fell to a hard fought 4-2 loss but learned a great lesson about the English style of play along the way.
The evening activities do a great job getting the group together as a whole since the boys and girls are all combined into teams. While there is a competitive aspect all week to these evening games it's also a time to laugh and partner with different kids throughout the week.
Tomorrow all the groups will be heading to the Brighton Pier to enjoy the quaint coastal town as well as the beach and the pier which is full of rides and games. A day free of soccer to re charge their batteries for more matches to be played on Thursday.Seacoast United Abroadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08271998240347030717noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5258554266906874846.post-62638384292364858002017-07-31T15:42:00.000-07:002017-08-01T13:26:22.325-07:00Day 2: July 31stWith heavy heads from a full day of travel and settling into our new home for the next ten days, everyone was tucked in their beds and sleeping soundly before lights out was even called.
The nightly team building exercise consisted of charades. Maybe on top of soccer we should all work on our acting skills. Many laughs were had by all.

It is such an amazing background to get the cobwebs out of our legs. Blue skies and beautiful buildings create an amazing and unique soccer backdrop.

Everyone is back in the dorms for some much needed sleep in preparation for a long day of soccer tomorrow. The players will meet the Brighton & Hove Albion coaching staff who will take the Players for two coaching sessions tomorrow.Seacoast United Abroadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08271998240347030717noreply@blogger.com1
